KP Significators: The Four Levels, How Rahu and Ketu Act as Agents, and How to Read a House Group

Which planets speak for a house, in what order, and why the star lord comes first

KP significators are the planets that carry the results of a house in Krishnamurti Paddhati. Every KP judgment eventually asks which planets signify the houses connected with a matter, and which of them can deliver it. K.S. Krishnamurti answered with a simple four-level method that looks at occupants, house lords and, above all, the stars (nakshatras) in which planets sit. This guide explains the four levels of significators, the standard order of strength and where practitioners differ, how Rahu and Ketu act as agents, how a house group is read for a matter, and the mistakes that trip up most beginners. You can follow along with the free KP significators calculator, which lists the significators of every house for any birth chart.

What Are Significators in KP Astrology?

In classical Vedic astrology, a house is usually judged by its lord, its occupants and the aspects it receives. KP keeps the houses and the planets, but it changes the question. Instead of asking only "who owns this house?", it asks "which planets are able to give the results of this house when their period runs?" Those planets are the significators in KP astrology.

The key idea behind the whole system is the star lord. Krishnamurti taught that a planet gives the results of the houses signified by the lord of the nakshatra it occupies, and that the planet's own house position and ownership come after that. In other words, the star lord shows what matters a planet will bring, and the sub lord shows whether those matters will turn out favourably. The significator list is built on that principle.

Two practical points come first. KP houses are drawn with Placidus cusps and the KP (Krishnamurti) ayanamsa, so a planet occupies a house if it falls between that house's cusp and the next cusp, not simply because it sits in the same sign. And the "lord" of a house is the lord of the sign in which that house's cusp falls. Both of these can differ from what you see in a sign-based kundali, which is why a proper KP chart is needed before any significator work begins.

The Four Levels of Significators (A, B, C, D)

The standard KP method, as set out in Krishnamurti's KP Readers and repeated in most KP teaching material, lists the significators of any house in four levels. They are usually labelled A, B, C and D:

A: Planets in the Star of the Occupants

Find the planets occupying the house. Then find every planet posited in the nakshatra of any of those occupants. These planets are the A level significators.

B: The Occupants of the House

The planets physically placed in the house, between its cusp and the next cusp. These are the B level significators.

C: Planets in the Star of the House Lord

Find the lord of the sign on the cusp. Every planet posited in that lord's nakshatra is a C level significator.

D: The House Lord

The lord of the sign in which the cusp falls. This is the D level significator.

In the standard teaching the order of strength is A, then B, then C, then D. A planet in the star of an occupant is treated as a stronger significator than the occupant itself, and a planet in the star of the house lord is treated as stronger than the lord itself. Every one of the nine planets, including Rahu and Ketu, can appear at any level, and a single planet can signify several houses at once.

Because the whole method depends on which nakshatra each planet occupies, the star lord of every planet must be read correctly. The 249 sub-lords table shows the sign lord, star lord and sub lord for every division of the zodiac, so you can check any degree by hand.

Why the Star Lord Comes First, and Where Practitioners Differ

The A over B ranking follows directly from the star lord principle. If a planet gives the results of its star lord, then a planet sitting in the star of the 7th house occupant is effectively delivering the matters of that occupant, and therefore of the 7th house. The occupant itself, by the same logic, gives the results of its own star lord first and of its house position second. That is why the textbook order places the planets in the star of the occupants above the occupants.

Not everyone applies this order in the same rigid way, and it is fair to say so plainly:

  • Some modern writers rank occupants first. A number of present-day KP guides and tools describe the occupants as the strongest level. That differs from the order in the KP Readers, so check which convention a list follows.
  • The "self-strength" refinement. Many KP teachers note that when no planet at all is posited in a given planet's nakshatra, that planet is said to be in "self strength" and gives the results of its own occupation and ownership more fully. In that case its own B or D position is weighed more heavily than the plain A to D order suggests.
  • Strength is not the final word. Even a strong significator is filtered through its sub lord. Most KP practitioners treat the four levels as a way to shortlist planets, and then use the sub lord and the ruling planets to decide which of them will actually deliver.

How Rahu and Ketu Act as Agents

Rahu and Ketu own no sign, so KP gives them a special rule. The nodes act as agents, or representatives, of the planets they are connected with. In addition to whatever they signify through their own occupation and star lord, a node also signifies the houses signified by:

A Conjoined Planet

A planet in close conjunction with the node. The node then speaks for that planet's houses too.

An Aspecting Planet

A planet that aspects the node. Its houses are also carried by the node.

Its Sign Lord

The lord of the sign in which the node is placed. The node represents that planet as well.

Practitioners describe the priority among these links a little differently. A common statement in KP teaching is that a node gives first the results of a conjoined planet, then of an aspecting planet, then of its star lord, then of its sign lord. Others stress that the node's own star lord remains the most decisive link. What all of them agree on is the practical consequence: Rahu and Ketu usually signify more houses than any other planet, so they very often appear in a significator list, and a Rahu or Ketu period can deliver the results of several planets at once.

How to Find the KP Significators of Houses: Step by Step

Here is the procedure for building the list of KP house significators for any one house.

1

Cast the KP chart correctly

Use the KP (Krishnamurti) ayanamsa and Placidus cusps. Note the degree of every cusp and every planet.

2

Write down each planet's star lord

For all nine planets, note the nakshatra lord of the degree they occupy. This single column drives levels A and C.

3

List the occupants (level B)

Every planet between this cusp and the next. If the house is empty, levels A and B are simply blank.

4

Find the planets in the occupants' stars (level A)

Scan your star lord column for any planet whose star lord is one of the occupants.

5

Name the house lord (level D) and the planets in its star (level C)

Take the lord of the sign on the cusp, then scan the star lord column again for planets in that lord's nakshatra.

6

Add Rahu and Ketu as agents

If a node is conjoined with, aspected by, or placed in the sign of a planet that signifies this house, the node also signifies it.

Repeat the process for all twelve houses and you have a complete significator table. The free KP significators calculator does exactly this, and the KP sub lord calculator gives the star lord and sub lord for any single degree when you want to check one planet.

Reading a House Group for a Matter

In KP no matter is judged from one house alone. Each question has a group of houses that must work together, and the houses in the 12th position from each of them act against the matter. A few standard groups:

MatterFavourable housesOpposing houses (12th from each)
Marriage2, 7, 111, 6, 10
Job or service2, 6, 10, 111, 5, 9 (and 12 for loss of job)
Education4, 9, 113, 8, 10

The significators of the favourable group are the planets that can bring the event. The reading then runs in three layers:

  • Promise: the sub lord of the main cusp decides whether the matter is promised at all. For marriage, the 7th cusp sub lord should signify 2, 7 or 11. This is explained in detail in our guide to KP marriage prediction from the 7th cusp, and the same logic applies to the 10th cusp for career.
  • Timing: the event tends to come in the joint periods (dasha, bhukti, antara) of planets that are significators of the favourable group.
  • Selection: when many planets qualify, KP practitioners keep the significators that also appear among the ruling planets at the time of judgment. These are often called the fruitful significators.

A Generic Worked Illustration

Illustration: significators of the 7th house

This is an invented layout used only to show the method. It is not anyone's birth chart.

  • Occupant (B): Jupiter is the only planet between the 7th and 8th cusps.
  • Planets in the occupant's star (A): Mercury is posited in a nakshatra ruled by Jupiter, so Mercury is an A level significator.
  • House lord (D): the 7th cusp falls in Libra, so Venus is the lord.
  • Planets in the lord's star (C): Saturn is posited in a nakshatra ruled by Venus, so Saturn is a C level significator.
  • Node as agent: Rahu is closely conjoined with Jupiter, so Rahu also carries Jupiter's signification of the 7th house.

The 7th house significators, in standard order, are therefore: A: Mercury, B: Jupiter (with Rahu as its agent), C: Saturn, D: Venus.

To judge marriage, the same list is built for the 2nd and 11th houses. Planets that signify 2, 7 and 11 together are the strongest candidates. The 7th cusp sub lord is then checked for promise, and the running dasha, bhukti and antara lords are compared with this list for timing. If a planet signifies both the favourable group and the opposing houses 1, 6 and 10, its result is mixed and needs the sub lord to decide.

Notice what the illustration does not do: it does not declare that marriage will or will not happen from the significator list alone. The list tells you which planets are able to deliver the matter. Whether and when they will is decided by the cusp sub lord, the dasha sequence and the ruling planets, which is covered in the KP sub lord explained.

Common Mistakes With KP Significators

Counting occupants by sign instead of by cusp

A planet in the same sign as the 7th cusp is not automatically in the 7th house. If it is behind the cusp degree, it belongs to the 6th. Always use cusp to cusp boundaries.

Mixing up the A and C levels

Level A is planets in the star of the occupants. Level C is planets in the star of the house lord. Swapping them changes the order of strength and the reading.

Forgetting the nodes

Leaving Rahu and Ketu out, or giving them only their own placement, misses the houses they carry as agents. Nodal periods are often where events actually happen.

Reading one house instead of the group

A strong 7th house significator that also strongly signifies 6 or 10 is not a clean indicator of marriage. Always look at the favourable and opposing houses together.

Treating the significator list as the verdict

Significators shortlist the planets. The cusp sub lord confirms the promise, and the dasha and ruling planets choose the time. Skipping those steps turns a method into guesswork.

Every chart on AjmerAstro is computed by its own calculation engine, and the AI only explains what was computed. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the four levels of significators in KP?

They are: A, planets in the star of the occupants of the house; B, the occupants themselves; C, planets in the star of the house lord; and D, the house lord. The standard KP order of strength is A, B, C, D.

Q: Why is a planet in the star of an occupant stronger than the occupant?

Because KP holds that a planet gives the results of its star lord first. A planet in the star of the occupant therefore delivers the occupant's house matters, while the occupant itself gives its own star lord's results before its house position. Some modern guides rank occupants first, so check the convention of any list you use.

Q: What if a house has no planets in it?

Then levels A and B are empty and the house is signified by the planets in the star of its lord (C) and by the lord itself (D), along with any node acting as an agent for those planets. An empty house can still give results.

Q: How do Rahu and Ketu become significators?

Besides their own occupation and star lord, the nodes act as agents of a planet they are conjoined with, a planet aspecting them, and the lord of the sign they occupy. They signify the houses those planets signify, which is why they appear so often in significator lists.

Q: Are significators enough to predict an event?

No. Significators show which planets can deliver a matter. KP practitioners then check the cusp sub lord for promise, the dasha, bhukti and antara for timing, and the ruling planets to select the fruitful significators.

Q: Are significators used in KP horary too?

Yes. In a KP horary chart cast from a number between 1 and 249, the same four levels are built for the houses connected with the question, and the same group and sub lord logic applies.
