KP Sub Lord Explained: The 249 Divisions, the Star Lord and Sub Lord Rule, and How to Read a Cusp Sub Lord

The smallest division in KP, and the one that gives the final word

The KP sub lord is the idea that sets Krishnamurti Paddhati apart from every other branch of Indian astrology. Traditional Jyotish reads a planet by its sign and its nakshatra. K.S. Krishnamurti went one step further: he cut every nakshatra into nine unequal parts and gave each part a ruler, the sub lord. In KP, that sub lord is treated as the deciding factor for whether a matter promised by the chart actually comes to pass. This guide covers what a sub lord is, why there are 249 of them, the planet, star lord and sub lord rule, cusp versus planet sub lords, and a worked illustration. You can look up the sub lord of any degree on our free KP sub lord calculator while you read.

What Is a Sub Lord in KP Astrology?

To answer what is sub lord in KP astrology, start with the layers every KP chart is built from. The zodiac of 360 degrees is divided into 12 signs of 30 degrees each, and every sign has a sign lord. The same zodiac is also divided into 27 nakshatras (stars) of 13 degrees 20 minutes each, and every nakshatra has a star lord, following the Vimshottari dasha order. Both layers come from traditional Vedic astrology.

KP adds a third layer. Each nakshatra is divided into nine smaller portions called subs, and each sub is ruled by one of the nine planets. That ruler is the sub lord. So any exact degree in a KP chart, whether it is a planet's position or the starting point of a house, has three rulers: a sign lord, a star lord and a sub lord. Many KP charts also list a sub-sub lord, but the core KP rules were written at the sub lord level.

Sign Lord

Ruler of the 30-degree sign. 12 divisions in the zodiac.

Star Lord

Ruler of the 13 degree 20 minute nakshatra. 27 divisions in the zodiac.

Sub Lord

Ruler of one of nine unequal parts of a nakshatra. 249 divisions in the zodiac.

How the Zodiac Is Divided into 249 Sub Lords

The subs are not equal. Krishnamurti sized each one in proportion to the planet's period in the 120-year Vimshottari dasha: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. A nakshatra is 13 degrees 20 minutes, which is 800 minutes of arc. Each planet's sub gets its share of those 800 minutes in the same ratio as its dasha years out of 120.

The first sub in every nakshatra belongs to the nakshatra's own star lord, and the remaining eight follow the Vimshottari sequence from there. Ashwini, for example, is ruled by Ketu, so its subs run Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. The widths are the same in every nakshatra; only the starting planet changes:

Sub lordDasha yearsWidth of sub
Ketu70°46'40"
Venus202°13'20" (widest)
Sun60°40'00" (narrowest)
Moon101°06'40"
Mars70°46'40"
Rahu182°00'00"
Jupiter161°46'40"
Saturn192°06'40"
Mercury171°53'20"

Nine subs in each of 27 nakshatras gives 243. So why does every KP reference speak of 249? Because nakshatra and sub boundaries do not always line up with the 30-degree sign boundaries. In six places a single sub starts in one sign and ends in the next. Since the sign lord changes at that boundary while the star lord and sub lord stay the same, each of those six subs is listed twice, once for each sign. That adds six entries and gives the familiar 249. KP horary uses the same numbering from 1 to 249. You can scan every one of them, with start and end degrees, in our 249 sub lords table.

Star Lord Sub Lord: The Three-Level Rule of KP

The heart of KP sub lord theory is a simple division of labour between three levels. KP teachers summarise it roughly like this:

The planet is the source

A planet is the agent that delivers a result. On its own, it tells you who or what is acting, but not which life matters it will produce.

The star lord shows the nature of the result

KP holds that a planet gives the results of the houses signified by the star lord in whose nakshatra it sits. The star lord therefore colours what kind of matter the planet will bring up: money, marriage, work, health and so on.

The sub lord decides whether it happens

The sub lord decides whether that matter will actually materialise, and whether the outcome is favourable or unfavourable for the person. It works as the gatekeeper on the star lord's promise.

This is why a planet can be strong by sign and well placed by house, yet fail to deliver when its sub lord signifies houses that oppose the matter. It is also why the star lord sub lord pair is read together: the star lord tells you what is on the table, and the sub lord tells you whether it will be served.

Where KP practitioners differ

The three-level maxim itself is standard KP. How far to take it is where schools part ways, and it is fair to say so plainly:

  • How to judge the sub lord. Many readers judge a sub lord mainly through the houses its own star lord signifies. Others give more weight to the sub lord's own placement and ownership, or to its sub lord in turn.
  • How many levels to use. Some practitioners stop at the sub lord. Later methods add the sub-sub lord or use multi-step reading chains that go deeper than Krishnamurti's own readers.
  • Which houses count as negative. The rule that the 12th from a house works against it is widely shared, but house lists for particular questions vary a little between teachers.

Cusp Sub Lords vs Planet Sub Lords

A KP chart has two kinds of sub lords, answering different questions.

A cusp sub lord is the sub lord of the exact degree at which a house begins. KP uses unequal houses, so each of the 12 cusps sits at its own degree, and each has its own sign lord, star lord and sub lord. The cusp sub lord of a house is read as the judge of that house's promise. The 7th cusp sub lord speaks to marriage, the 10th to career, the 5th to children and studies. If the cusp sub lord signifies the houses that support the matter, the matter is considered promised in the chart. If it signifies houses that oppose it, KP reads the matter as denied, delayed or troubled.

A planet sub lord is the sub lord of the degree a planet occupies. It helps decide whether that planet, when its dasha, bhukti or antara runs, will actually deliver the results its star lord points to. A planet in a helpful star but an unhelpful sub may run its period with little of the expected result.

Cusp sub lord answers: is it promised?

Read from the starting degree of a house. Decides whether the chart holds the promise of that house's matters at all.

Planet sub lord answers: will this period deliver?

Read from a planet's degree. Decides whether that planet can give the results of its star lord when its period runs.

In practice, KP readers check the cusp sub lord for the promise, list the planets signifying the relevant houses, then use the running dasha and ruling planets for timing. The full KP chart shows the sign, star and sub lord of every cusp and planet together, and the KP significators calculator lists which planets signify which houses.

Worked Illustration: Reading One Cusp Sub Lord

Here is a generic illustration, built only to show the method. It is not anyone's chart, and a real reading looks at far more than one cusp. The question is the classic one: is marriage promised? In KP the supporting houses for marriage are generally taken as 2 (addition to the family), 7 (spouse and partnership) and 11 (fulfilment of desires). Houses 1, 6 and 10, which are the 12th from 2, 7 and 11, are read as working against it.

1

Find the 7th cusp degree

Suppose the 7th cusp falls at 9°30' of Libra. The sign lord is Venus, because Venus rules Libra.

2

Find the star lord

Swati nakshatra runs from 6°40' to 20°00' of Libra, and Rahu rules Swati. So the star lord of the 7th cusp is Rahu.

3

Find the sub lord

Inside Swati, the Rahu sub covers 6°40' to 8°40', and the Jupiter sub covers 8°40' to 10°26'40". The cusp at 9°30' falls in the Jupiter sub. So the 7th cusp sub lord is Jupiter.

4

See what the sub lord signifies

Now assume, for illustration, that Jupiter sits in a nakshatra ruled by Venus, and that Venus occupies the 11th house and rules the signs on the 2nd and 7th cusps. Through its star lord, Jupiter then signifies houses 2, 7 and 11.

5

Give the verdict on the promise

A 7th cusp sub lord signifying 2, 7 and 11 is read in KP as a promise of marriage. If the same Jupiter had instead been in the star of a planet signifying 1, 6 and 10, the reading would lean towards delay, denial or difficulty.

6

Move on to timing

A promise says nothing yet about when. The reader now lists the significators of 2, 7 and 11, checks which of them run as dasha, bhukti and antara lords, and confirms with the ruling planets. That is a separate step from the sub lord verdict.

Notice how narrow step 3 was. Had the cusp fallen just past 10°26'40", the sub lord would have become Saturn, and the verdict would rest on entirely different significations.

Why Sub Lords Need an Exact Birth Time

Planets move slowly, so a planet's sub lord rarely changes with a small error in birth time. Cusps are different. The ascendant moves through all 360 degrees in about a day, which works out to roughly one degree every four minutes on average, and all the other cusps move with it. The real speed varies with the rising sign and the latitude of birth, so treat that figure as an average.

Now compare that speed with the width of a sub. The narrowest sub, the Sun's, is only 40 minutes of arc, which on average the ascendant crosses in under three minutes of clock time. Even the widest, the Venus sub at 2°13'20", passes in around nine minutes. So a birth time that is off by a few minutes can move a cusp into the next sub, change its sub lord, and change the KP verdict on that house. This is why KP astrologers ask for the most exact birth time available and often rectify it with ruling planets before relying on cusp sub lords. We cover this in more depth in our guide to how birth time accuracy affects lagna, dasha and sub lords.

When a key cusp sits within a few minutes of arc of a sub boundary, treat its sub lord as sensitive and confirm it. Where no reliable birth time exists at all, KP offers KP horary, which works from a number between 1 and 249 and the moment of the question instead of a birth chart.

KP Ayanamsa and Placidus Cusps: Why the Settings Matter

Two settings sit under every KP sub lord.

The ayanamsa. KP uses the Krishnamurti ayanamsa, not Lahiri. The two differ by only a few minutes of arc, which almost never changes a sign or a nakshatra. With subs as narrow as 40 minutes, though, a cusp or planet near a sub boundary can land in a different sub under the two values. Krishnamurti's rules and published examples were worked out on his own ayanamsa, so KP readers treat it as part of the method. You can compare the values for any date on the KP ayanamsa calculator.

The house system. KP uses Placidus cusps, an unequal house system in which each house begins at its own calculated degree. The cusp sub lord only makes sense when the cusp is an exact degree. Whole-sign or equal houses give different cusp degrees, and therefore different cusp sub lords that describe no real KP chart.

AjmerAstro follows these settings in all its KP tools. Every chart is computed by AjmerAstro's own calculation engine, and the AI only explains what was computed. The KP tools use the KP (Krishnamurti) ayanamsa with Placidus cusps. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a sub lord in KP astrology?

It is the ruler of one of nine unequal parts into which KP divides every nakshatra. The parts are sized in proportion to each planet's Vimshottari dasha years, so every degree of the zodiac has a sign lord, a star lord and a sub lord.

Q: Why are there 249 sub lords and not 243?

Nine subs in 27 nakshatras gives 243. In six places a sub crosses a sign boundary, so its sign lord changes partway through. Each of those six subs is listed once for each sign, which adds six entries and makes 249.

Q: What is the difference between the star lord and the sub lord?

In standard KP, the star lord shows the nature of the result, meaning which house matters a planet will bring up. The sub lord decides whether that result actually materialises and whether it turns out favourable or unfavourable.

Q: What is a cusp sub lord?

It is the sub lord of the exact degree where a house begins. KP reads it as the judge of that house: if it signifies the houses that support the matter, the matter is considered promised, and if it signifies opposing houses, KP reads delay, denial or difficulty.

Q: How accurate does my birth time need to be for KP sub lords?

As accurate as possible. On average the ascendant crosses the narrowest sub in under three minutes, so an error of a few minutes can change a cusp sub lord.

Q: Can I find KP sub lords using the Lahiri ayanamsa?

It is not recommended. KP rules were built on the Krishnamurti ayanamsa with Placidus cusps. Lahiri differs by only a few minutes of arc, enough to change a sub lord near a sub boundary.
